Former US President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Friday to two charges of incitement of insurrection, stemming from the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. The charges were filed by the Justice Department in a grand jury indictment.
Trump is accused of making false claims about the 2020 election being stolen and inciting his supporters to storm the Capitol in an attempt to overturn the results. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
Trump’s plea came as a surprise to many, as he had previously indicated that he would not cooperate with the investigation. However, his lawyers said that he was now prepared to fight the charges in court.
The indictment is the latest in a series of legal challenges facing Trump. He is also facing a civil lawsuit from the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack, and he is under investigation by the New York Attorney General’s office for possible financial crimes.
